A 77-year-old British man has died and 27 others injured after a bus carrying tourists crashed into a ravine in La Gomera, in the Canary Islands.

The group were driving to the San Sebastián de La Gomera dock where they were due to travel by ferry to Tenerife, Spanish news outlet El Mundo reported.

There were 28 people on board, including 27 British tourists and one driver, emergency services 112 Canarias said in a post on X.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said they were "supporting the family of a British man who died in the bus accident".

All 27 injured people were initially taken to Hospital Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, on the east of the island.

Twenty-one have since been discharged, the hospital's management said in a statement on Friday night. Three remain there "under observation", it added, while three seriously injured people have been transferred to hospitals in neighbouring Tenerife.

Earlier, 112 Canarias said two patients - a 73-year-old man and a 42-year-old man, both with multiple serious injuries - had been taken been taken by helicopter to Tenerife for treatment.

Head of emergency operations in La Gomera Héctor Cabrera told public broadcaster TVE the bus passengers had been "staying at a resort" on the island.

In its statement, 112 Canarias said emergency services received a call at 13:16 local time (13:16 BST) that a bus had left the road and fallen down a slope.

The bus was travelling on the GM-2 road before crashing in to the ravine.

It fell from a height of around 10m, according to El Mundo.

It is a mountainous road with sharp turns, and an image shared by the emergency services appears to show that it crashed near a hairpin bend.

Three helicopters and five ambulances were among the resources deployed to the scene, 112 Canarias said.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said on X her "thoughts are with those affected by the tragic incident involving a bus carrying British holidaymakers".

"We are in touch with the local authorities and ready to support Brits and their families," she added, sharing details of the Foreign Office contact numbers. President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, offered his "support to the victims and their families"
